I SHOWERED QUICKLY TO get the chlorine and the feel of Chase holding me steady against him off me. But no amount of scrubbing my skin roughly would erase the imprints of his hands on my thighs. When I was back in the safety of my own room, I felt uncharacteristically lonely.

My boldness and bravery had taken a new turn—for the good I hoped. I was finally going after what I wanted. Even though my insecurities and fears were still planted deep in my head, continuously making me question what was right, I went for it.

I had hoped that when I asked if I could trust him, that I didn’t seem as weak as I felt. I felt like he could break me. Perhaps that was where the root of my fears started. I didn’t want to imagine the downfall of what would probably happen anyways.

My rumored reputation had tainted my trust of guys and had made me shy away from every potential significant other. But with Chase? I finally felt like I could tear down the walls I built up. I finally felt like someone was worth all the risks.

I heard the sound of a shower starting and my eyes immediately shot up to the bathroom door I had just come from. I stood, finished drying myself off and quickly dressed in a short pair of pale blue pajama bottoms and a thin black, pullover hoodie.

The shower door clicked open and then clicked back shut at the same time I heard a guttural growl and, “Holy shit!” I had to put my hand over my mouth to keep from bursting out laughing. Was he taking a cold shower? The thought was amusing and I fell back on the bed silently shaking from my amusement.

It was after midnight and I kept glancing over to the door every time I heard a tick or creak, hoping it would be him coming to seek me out. I didn’t want to hope for that, because I knew it would only lead to darker roads and twisted sheets if I wasn’t careful. By one, I was restless and tossing and turning trying to find some comfort in this plush bed. It never came.

By one-thirty, I couldn’t wait any longer. I threw the duvet off and tiptoed to the bathroom door. Opening it just slightly, I peeked in to find the other door that entered his room was cracked. I snuck up to it, trying to be quiet. When I peeked through, I could see the colorful hues of the TV flashing.

Was he suffering from the same restlessness I was?

I pulled the door back slightly to squeeze through. His back was to me and I wasn’t sure if he was asleep or awake. I looked over to the TV to see reruns of Cold Case playing. “Chase,” I whispered, but he didn’t stir.

I guess he really was asleep. I continued to tiptoe over to his bed, climbing up and crawling over to him, I rested on my heels.
